Peterborough VS Man City Final Match LIVE Football Score 01 Mar 2022

Manchester City will be bidding to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup when they make the trip to Championship side Peterborough United on Tuesday night. The English champions beat Fulham 4-1 in the previous round of the competition, while Peterborough secured their spot at this stage courtesy of a 2-0 home success over Queen Park Rangers. Peterborough have won two home ties to advance to the fifth round of this season’s FA Cup, recording a 2-1 victory over Bristol Rovers on January 8 before beating Queens Park Rangers 2-0 at the start of February. The Posh have already exceeded expectations in this season’s competition and are bidding to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1965, which is an indication of the size of their task on Tuesday night.

Darren Ferguson resigned as Peterborough manager on February 20, with the club currently bottom of the Championship table, boasting just 21 points from their 33 matches. Grant McCann was reappointed as head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal last week, but the 41-year-old was unable to make a winning start on Saturday, with the strugglers losing 3-0 at home to Hull City Man City have won the FA Cup on six occasions, the last of which was in 2019, when they beat Watford 6-0 in the final, and they are considered by many to be the favourites for this season’s crown. The English champions have been semi-finalists in the last two campaigns, and it is slightly surprising that Guardiola has only won one FA Cup during his time at the Etihad Stadium considering the enormous success that the Spaniard has enjoyed since arriving in 2016.

The cup fixture should come as a welcome distraction for a Man City currently embroiled in a tense title race with Liverpool. The defending champions are currently leading the table, but only hold a three-point advantage over the Reds, who are in supreme form and have recently secured the Carabao Cup, with a win over Chelsea. Manchester City had a rather weak outing in the League Cup, getting knocked out by West Ham in the fourth round. They have had a relatively better run in the FA Cup, winning 4-1 against Swindon Town and Fulham in the earlier rounds and are now eyeing a place in the quarterfinal, as they take on Peterborough. Currently languishing at the bottom of the Championship table, Peterborough are winless in the league this year and are the undisputed favourites to get relegated come the end of the season. However, their impressive wins over QPR and Bristol Rovers in the earlier rounds of the FA Cup should give Darren Ferguson’s men some confidence as they get set to take on the Premier League giants.

Peterborough and Manchester City have previously met each other only once, curiously in the same stage of the FA Cup back in 1981, with the Cityzens clinching a narrow 1-0 victory. Almost forty years later, the Manchester giants will be aiming for yet another triumph over the Posh as the two sides lock horns at the Weston Homes Stadium this midweek. Head coach Darren Ferguson has often interchanged between a three-man backline and a four-man defence this term. But with his premier right-back out injured, we are expecting the Scot to go with a three-man rearguard, with Josh Knight, Ronnie Edwards and Frankie Kent covering Steven Benda in goal.

The 3-4-1-2 formation does offer Peterborough numerical superiority in the middle of the park. However, given their shoddy record in the Championship and overall quality of the Manchester City frontline, it won’t be surprising to see them operate in a 5-2-3 for a large period of the game, with the wing-backs joining the three central defenders. The Posh come into this match having shipped three goals to fellow Championship strugglers Hull at the weekend and now they entertain a Man City team that have scored 26 goals across their past 10 games – including four against the Championship league leaders in the previous round. Given Peterborough are barely fit to lace the boots of a side like Fulham, this game could well go goal crazy. We’re backing over 4.5 goals.
